Hi folks I am new on here . Quick question..... what surfaces are best for western riding? I ask coz I am hopefully moving soon (want a small house and more land, as have got a lg house and 7 acres....to much housework!! ) and will bein a position to build an arena. I have a 20 x 40 m silica sand and rubber granuals surface at the mo, but hope to have a 30 x 60 m arena....fingers crossed!
So any ideas on surfaces, muchly appreciated.

Im not sure what mine is its adark colour quite gritty and got lots of bit of colourd plastic in it, and its horrible. I was riding on a school the other day that was just beach sand, had the odd pebble in it but was really good to work on, actually got some slides, which is like WOW for my horse. Would not recomend it if you were gonna do any jumping on it ever though a few horse i know wont jump on it so well casue its so loose

Sand or Ash or both might be good for you. Easy for the pleasure horses to move over and great for the reining horses to move through especially if you take care of it and keep it harrowed and rolled as much as you can. Try searching for one of the American sites for arena specialists to see what kind of mixes they suggest....
