I have started to retrain my 18 year old horse to western. He loves it! However, he is a very smart boy and anticipates a lot.

He has picked up rein back and shoulder in very quickly. he already knew turn on the forehand and on the haunches. However now if I try to do turn on the forehand or haunches from a halt he zooms backwards! the feel that comes up from him is arnt I clever, so he isnt evading.

He is fine to do the turns from a walk, I think it is genuine confusion on his part.

Any sugestions to resolve this?

Hi
Just a thought, maybe you could try putting, his bum to the fence, & then asking, just be happy with a step at first, that way the fence is there for support, & he will learn to listen to you cues, & not take charge, do it a few times, then go off & do something he is comfortable with, maybe incorporate it severel times in your training session, & see how you get on.
It can be very frustrating, sometimes when they anticipate what you are asking
GOOD LUCK
