Reining Class for a Non Quarter Horse 2008/05/25 00:25 Karma: 0
Are there any reining classes for non QH's or would I be laughed out of the arena on my Welsh cross? We have been working really hard the last few months and I think it would really do her good to get out to a show and enjoy herself. I have really self taught myself and her for fun but over the last month we have really come on leaps and bounds. OK its not going to be the most polished display you have seen, but would just be fun to give it a whirl!

Any suggestions?

Many thanks
Ange

British Reining or NRHA classes. I am pretty sure you dont need a QH for their shows either, because the paints and appaloosa's compete there. So why not your little horse.

Have a go and dont be put off, fly the flag for the other breeds out there. All horses can do decent reining patterns. Its a matter of training not breeding, just like all of the other equestrian disciplines.

Welsh crosses are generally, athletic, quick to learn and very capable

In Germany there is a Haflinger doing a very good job on the reining circuit. As everyone says....HAVE A GO. BR and WES are a great place to start neither are breed specific and very open for newbies coming along. BEST OF LUCK

Well thank you so much guys. Has given me confidence. I'm not too sure what to wear and where to start exactly, but it would be nice to fly the flag for other breeds and show that we can all have fun. I simply don't have the money to indulge myself and have two horses so decided to make the best of what I had! She was always very unruly at English and didn't like it much, now she enjoys herself (sometimes a bit too much!).

She has a good mean stop, rollback and flying changes are coming on well. Today she tackled spins and within half an hour had the picture, we've self taught ourselves.

I really hope to be able to meet some of you sometime, I think it will give us the confidence we need. I just feel a bit intimidated!

Can go to bed and dream now.....

Hiya,

Give British Reining a call - they have cheap reining clinics for beginners. They are subsidised by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers so are only about £35 for the whole day.

Trainers include David Deptford at Sovereign Quarter Horses (Cambs), Susie Anderson (Sussex), and Shane Borland (Warks). Visit www.britishreining.co.uk for the contacts.

Hope to see you out and about soon!

T
