The proper term for the rear cinch is called the Flank cinch, it is to stabilize the saddle, & should be a snug fit, NOT TIGHT, & always to be used with a connecter strap that attaches to the front cinch, other wise if it slipped back could be classed as a bucking strap, (NOT NICE)
Not sure if western classes use them, I have seen a few use them in reinning, but they are mostly used on working saddles, that dont have all the bling on them, although lots have the option for them. We have them on ours & have always used them.
