Saddle pads 2007/05/21 18:44 Karma: 0
We would be pleased to receive some comments on saddle pads- neoprene, felt, gel, wool etc. pros and cons. Many thanks.

For a quarter horse type with a 'normal' back ie fairly flat, not much wither I would go for the professionals choice wool backed style every time.
We winced at the price before being given a nearly new one by our fairy godmother (she knows who she is!) and have since purchased a second one for best, although the two year old one is still smart enough to show in.
They are worth every penny - look good, easy to clean (brush regularly and then pressure wash once a year when horsey is on holiday to allow for a couple of day's drying time) and very hard wearing.
Haven't used a neoprene type on a western saddle, but have used plenty of similar pads under side saddles. They do keep a saddle in place on a roly-poly horse, but they do make them sweat, so you need to be very disciplined with washing off, particularly for any sensitive types!
Can't help you with the felt ones I'm afraid.

I agree, the Pro Choice pads are excellent. On my 'roly-poly' mare, I use either a limpet pad or a tacky too type which doesn't make them sweat as much as the neoprene. You can also get what they call a comfort or pebble pad and put a blanket over it for showing. Haven't got any experience with the gel pads, though I've heard they are very heavy.
