Saddle Slipping 2007/08/09 10:37 Karma: 0
Hi, Im new to western riding and i have just bought a Western Saddle for my mare. It seams to fit her well but when ever i mount or dismount it slips round (no matter how tight the cinch is!!). I have tried it with a non-slip pad, but no difference.

Does anyone have any tips on how to stop this?

Thanks

You might need to use a mounting block or get someone to hold the other stirrup. Our saddle does this and lots of other western saddles move a bit too - presume yours is a QH, even dainty ones like ours are roly poly!

I would second the use of a mounting block. This is much better for a horse's back whether English or Western, unless you are vaulting on or being given a leg up.

I'd second the 'checking the fit' suggestion. Did you have it fitted professionally?

I have a friend who hold the other sturrip or i use a log to get on (same as i do when i ride english)

The fact that my pony is quite round probably doesn't help!!

I fitted the saddle myself and it was checked by someone who has been riding westerns for a few years. However i am planning to get it fitted properly as soon as i can get some transport to get my pony to the yard where she takes her horse for lesson/shows.

Does anyone know a western saddler that come out to you? i'm in Littlehampton, West
Sussex.
