Hoof Boots / barefoot boots 2007/10/14 11:02 Karma: 0
Can anyone recommend which type of barefoot boot or hoof boot is best? There are quite a few on the market these days and I want some for occasional use as I'd like to take my 3 year old for long rides on the south downs, but the going can be a bit tough underfoot, with flints and stones. She manages fine on short hacks and tarmac, but is a bit touchy on gravel etc and I don't want to shoe her yet, as she doesn't do enough work outside the sand school to warrant it (plus I prefer to shoe when fully grown).
I did use some a long time ago when they were quite basic and they didn't always stay on if you encountered mud and also some rubbed the heels. Any recommendations much appreciated.

I have found Boa Boots to be very good.

Old Macs have been great for our horses

I used Old Mac G2s on my mare when she had a hoof infection earlier this year, they were absolutely great (other than cleaning down afterwards!); no rubs, twists, we were able to lope through clay and they were excellent for reducing concussion on chalk and flint; I showed them to our remedial farrier who thinks they're the business but he also thinks the Cavallos are very good (for some I think they are slightly easier to fit). I think my hoof boots represent some of the best money I've ever spent on horse kit. But if you've got a forward going horse, like me, be warned, it's like kitting them in Nikes, power multiplied!!

The guy who invented Boa's and Mac's also invented Cavallos - they dont have the liner which the people that bought out Boa's and Mac's added later.
