Showing Appaloosa's 2008/04/01 12:53 Karma: 1
Does anyone know what classes Appaloosa's can be shown in hand?

My friend seems to think that they would be classed as coloured but the shows that are coming up in my area do not include Appy's in their listings.

Hi ya,

you CAN show them in coloured, but you will be placed WAY down the bottom of the line

Most judges do not class spotties as coloureds. Most appaloosa classes are run either as affiliated classes - i.e. only for members of either BApS or ApHCUK or open - meaning anyone can exhibit their spottie. Sadly, these latter are becoming few and far between.

What 'type' of horse will your youngster be i.e. stocky hunter type, or sports horse type - you could always do what we did and overstamp with Sport Horse GB if the type is right and then show against solids. If your horses conformation is good enough, it will do ok (allowing for spotted bias amongst many judges) but expect to find yourself at the bottom of the lineup unless the conformation is right up there.

What is the breeding of your spottie, how old (sorry, think I saw a pic recently..on here?_).

On another note, did you know there are Appaloosa classes at "The Royal" this year for the first time and that Atira's filly who is by The Mendip Stud's Private B Riker has qualified!!!

If I can help with showing your app, let me know.

Jude.

My boy is Exbury Moonraker out of Exbury Fantasy Bay and Amazing Moonstruck.
He is currently standing at 14.3hh at 3 years old (4 at the end of July) so I wouldn't think that he would make much more than 15.1hh.
He is a chestnut roan with a snowflake blanket but has started to get chestnut spots on his bum - hopefully the image will show up at the bottom.

His confirmation is very good but he isn't that stocky but wouldn't type as a sports horse either.

Would suggest you get in touch with BApS and APHC to see which has the most in hand classes in your area and then see if you can register your youngster with them!

He does look well marked so you ought to do some appy stuff with him.

Otherwise, shows round us just seem to have a generic 'youngstock' class which is good experience if nothing else. And you do sometimes see spotties, duns and even roans on the schedule for coloured classes at local shows!

You're better off than my friend who had a few spot appy that was a true riding horse stamp. She was not spotty enough to do well in appy classes and too spotty to do well in riding horse classes!

Firstly, youngstock classes are a good education, so tha tis good advise, you can go up the line if your fella has that laid back temperment and nice conformation that many appys have.Manners are paramount.

Local riding clubs often have Coloured/spotted/ palamino classes, and under many judges thats the order they will be placed.
However my last horse, was a few spot and has been placed highly in riding horse/ riding club horse (inhand and under saddle)
She also has beaten many coloureds because her conformation and movement was far better than the coloureds she was up against.

Please support your breed societies, national and regional shows.I know all the get outs, too far, cant get there etc. But you meet lots of friends, meet some super horses and learn a lot about the breed of your choice.

At the end of the day, if the horse is a good horse, no judge will see you at the bottom of the line!

The Spotted , Horse and Pony Society, also have shows around the country, open to all, as long as the horse is spot bred, and looking at your nice boy no one could doubt it!

BAPS, have classes at many County level, shows, plus a Northern and National show. ApHC have three (?)regional shows and a National show.

I have a noncharacteristic filly, advertised on this site. I will be doing Ponies UK qualifiers with her , Inhand Show Hunter type, and Inhand Potential Sports/dressage horse. Your guy could do these i am sure.Qualifiers are held at local riding clubs. Check the Ponies UK site for shows near you.

If your Amazing Moonstruck boy has as good movement as my Amazing Moonstruck girl, you should do very well in both appy and non-appy competition. He is very nice btw.

Agree with Appynospots support your breed societies but do look around for classes locally - I didn't mean to sound negative earlier only that our initial introduction to showing apps was neither welcoming nor enjoyable. Much preferred showing her (Lavender, in avatar) in SHGB classes.

We should have spotty babies next year, so will be out on the spotted circuit again.

Jude
