Not long to go now and haven't done nearly enough riding! But can anyone suggest some light weight trousers/jods for our holiday in Africa? Have searched the web until I've gone dizzy but worried that they would be too heavy. Thanks

Have you looked at www.kileq.co.uk. I have not tried them myself yet but I know someone who says they are really great and very comfortable. They are sponsoring the WES show at Abergavenny in Sept so they deserve our support.
Have a great holiday!

Hi Misty

Hope you have a FANTASTIC time and tell us all about it when you get back. When I've been, I've ridden in any old lightweight jod - old being the operative word - eg Harry Hall/Hac Tac, so long as it's predominantly cotton, got the seams in the right place and is preferably navy/khaki/coffee coloured, ie you won't stick out like sore thumb in the veld, with either leather or Ariat Terrain-style half chaps. Have also ridden in lightweight trekking trousers (mainly microfibre) from Fat Face under full leather chaps, and the ubiquitous shorts, just as comfy as the above. Just make sure you're protected from saddle rubs and thorn trees!

Hi Roland I love your viewpoint but butt protection is not Pony Club - you get the slightest rub out there and you cross a river and pick up Bilharzia or whatever and you've got major problems, and it ain't localised to your derriere - denim doesn't always look too pretty if you're hot, a bit sweaty, not that fit and the fit isn't 100%. I've been there and come back to UK with a leg like a tree trunk from a nasty infection in a fledgling saddle sore due to something in the water during a full dunking river crossing - wouldn't put me off doing it all over again but it's a bit of an embarrassment to explain to the poor nurse who's got to dress your butt for the next week

Any other occasion - yep, Wranglers are on!!

Thanks for that folks. The website is a tad expensive and I really need to feel how thin they are, but thanks.
Looked in the old jodphur draw and lo and behold two pairs for OH. Lightweight, one black, one grey and a pair of cotton dark green for me. I shall take some scissors (in the hold luggage) and if necessary cut them down to wear with chaps. Just need to get an other pair of the same for me. I think suede chaps may be a bit hot but after Mexico they may be safer!
Now, what's all this about infected butts! You've really put the wind up me now! When riding for over 10 miles I use the vaseline and padded pants method! I make OH do the same which he thinks is unmanly but it works.
I am taking the straw wide brimmed hats we bought in Mexico (hope they survive the journey) as they have stampede strings, gloves and long sleeves (seen sunburnt wrists, not a pretty sight. Any other hints, this is getting serious now as I have got to get everything we need SOON.
