I have a non-quarter horse reining horse, Buddy that my husband has trained and competes. Bud's sire was an American Paint Horse and his mom was a non-descript hunter-type mare. He has competed at WES when the surfaces are suitable and more recently competed in the two open unaffiliated reining classes at the QH2000 spring show and placed 2nd and 1st. He has also just run in his first 2 British Reining classes and placed 2nd in both, all against some nice Quarter Horses.
We also own Quarter Horses and love them but it has made me smile to think that anyone who had previously considered 'laughing us out of the arena' as you say, probably isn't doing anymore!!
It is true to say that the Quarter Horse is probably better equipped physically to do the job of a reining horse but Bud does go to prove that even though he doesn't even nearly have a QH type conformation (our farrier says he has cart horse feet when he puts his slide plates on!) it is possible to go and rein on an non-QH!
Good Luck to you!

Thank you all for your support and ideas, its very humbling! I have now established where we can compete. I will do a video as soon as I pluck up the courage and post it for you all to comment on.

Very interestingly, we had a problem for ages with an incorrect leg on the left lead which was possibly down to an original joint problem and then knocked onto being stiff and difficult. I corrected this and she was quite strong on the side she found difficult. So as not to be strong on her in return I used my old technique of less is more and threw off the headstall and used a parelli halter type instead. It was amazing and amazed everyone that she was suddenly not strong, relaxed, and performing the nicest work yet.

I'm not sure she has a clue why we are trying to learn to spin, but certainly enjoys it!

Thank you again so much and I really hope to be able to see you all soon, just for fun on our part! Well done to those few who have the clever non QH's too, i'm inspired

My Welsh Section D cross took part in a clinic with Bruce Lawrence recently and surprised himself at what he could do. I have seen huge cobs doing reining patters. If they are agile they can do it.
