Although my halter has a leather and chain lead, I have so far just clipped the clip straight to the ring without feeding it up over his head when showing because he is a baby, and like yours, its a bit much for them especially if they are likely to be a bit excited at a show anyway.
I personally think, if its a baby in a youngstock class you can get away with the chain just clipped on and not fed through.
